Office of the State Treasurer

The Office of the State Treasurer was created by our state's first Constitution. As a constitutional officer, the State Treasurer oversees investments on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, promotes the state's unclaimed property program to return money to citizens, and advocates for fiscal responsibility.

Unclaimed Property

The Office of the State Treasurer is responsible for helping to promote the unclaimed property program in Wisconsin. When Businesses are unable to return property to the rightful owner, the property gets turned over to the state, and the state holds those assests in trust until the assests can be returned to the rightful owner.

The state is currently holding over $900 million in property. Over $55 million was returned last year. You may have unclaimed property and not even know it. You can search and claim your property all on one site, by visiting DOR Unclaimed Property (wi.gov)

School Trust Funds

Investing in public schools and local communities is a core duty of the State Treasurer’s office, and Treasurer Leiber has worked diligently to ensure effective management of public funds. Through the Treasurer’s role on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, he oversees its $1.6 billion in state trust funds. The Treasurer’s priorities include:

  • Investing wisely to provide record-breaking distributions for the Common School Fund that provides funding for our public schools focused on supporting libraries and technology. $73.5 million has been returned to school districts alone, and over $250 million over the last four years.
  • Supporting municipalities and school districts by financing critical projects that include roads and bridges to housing. To learn more about the State Trust Fund Loan Program, click here, and to see a map of investments across the state, click here.

Fiscal Responsibilty

Wisconsin taxpayers deserve to know their money is handled with discipline. The Office of the State Treasurer runs a lean operation and continues to ensure every dollar is spent wisely.

  • The State Treasurer's office is strictly funded by the Unclaimed Property Program. Not one single tax dollar is spent to fund the Treasurer's office.
  • The State Treasurer runs an efficient office by focusing on the core responsibilities of the job.
  • The State Treasurer is working with our legislature to support Common School Fund revenues, and find new ways to return Unclaimed Property to the people.

I am proud to serve as your State Treasurer. I'm commited to making sure that the programs that I help manage get the greatest returns so that everyone in Wisconsin benefits from our public investments. If there is any way I can help or answer any questions you may have, feel free to reach out.

Thank you,

State Treasurer John Leiber
